In 1978, Taito is a struggling manufacturer of Pachinko games, that year one of their engineers
Toshihiro Nishikado designs and programs their first videogame Space Invaders. The more aliens you
shoot, the faster they move, accompanied by an ominous, thudding marching sound. The display is black
and white, with screen overlays giving the appearance of colour.
Caused riots when it was released in Japan and caused a nationwide coin shortage that caused the government
to quadruple Yen production.
Many incidents of juvenile crime surrounded the release of this game. A girl was caught stealing $5000 from
her parents and gangs of youths were reported to have robbed grocery stores just so they would have money to
play the game.
